Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you support businesses anywhere in Australia?

Yes. Most of our work is delivered remotely with secure tooling and clear communication, so we can support organisations across Australia without you needing a provider in the same suburb. We’re based in Newcastle and also schedule on-site time when it genuinely needs a physical presence, such as rack work, Wi‑Fi surveys, workstation rollouts, or stakeholder workshops.

How do security audits work, and can they be done remotely without disrupting our team?

Most assessments can be performed remotely against systems you authorise. Work is spread over roughly two to eight hours of engineer time, typically completed in the background so day-to-day work isn’t interrupted; we’re not “hovering” at every desk. When an activity might be noticeable (e.g. targeted vulnerability scanning windows), we plan it with you first. You receive documented outcomes in plain language (what we checked, what we found, severity, and practical remediation order), not a raw dump of jargon.

What should we know about website hosting with Layer 3?

Hosting should match your risk, traffic, and compliance needs. We provide managed hosting paths suited to production workloads, including clear ownership of backups, TLS, patching cadence, and monitoring. For some stacks (for example production WordPress) we prefer infrastructure we can reason about end‑to‑end rather than anonymous bulk shared hosting, so you get traceability when security or performance questions come up.

Can upgrading hardware improve our security posture?

Often, yes, especially if devices are end‑of‑life, missing firmware updates, or lack modern security foundations. Replacing or standardising desktops and laptops can enable TPM-backed encryption, safer boot chains, and up‑to‑date OS support. Network edge hardware (firewalls, Wi‑Fi, switching) matters too: segmented guest networks, sane VPN access, and hardware that still receives security patches. We’ll map cost-effective upgrades to the risks you actually carry instead of pitching a blanket “buy new everything” message.

Will our site be fast, secure, and updated for us?

Those outcomes depend on the platform, hosting tier, and scope of care you choose, but they’re explicit targets in every engagement. Performance work includes sensible caching, image and asset discipline, and hosting sized for your traffic. Security includes patching, TLS, access control, backups, and monitoring hooks appropriate to the site. If you want “hands-off” operation, we can run updates and health checks on a defined cadence so small issues don’t snowball between releases.

Which Microsoft products do you supply and support?

We work across the core Microsoft stack most Australian SMEs rely on: Microsoft 365 (including Exchange Online email and calendaring), Teams and collaborative workspaces, SharePoint and OneDrive, Entra ID (Azure AD) identities and conditional access, Microsoft Intune / Endpoint management, and Azure services where you need cloud infrastructure, backup, or hybrid connectivity. Licensing, tenant hygiene, and secure rollout are all in scope. Tell us what you’re running today and we’ll align support to that footprint.

How quickly can we expect support responses?

For managed clients we aim to engage active requests quickly: many technical items see work underway within the hour during business hours, with triage matched to severity. You should always hear from us within the hour so you’re not left guessing. After-hours paths exist where you need assured coverage for critical incidents; exact SLAs are set out in your agreement so expectations stay transparent.

Is reporting included with MSP services?

Yes. Managed services clients receive meaningful visibility, not just a monthly invoice line. We provide network security and health reporting tailored to what we’re managing: patch posture, backup status, endpoint and identity signals, key risks, and trend notes where useful. You also get detailed ticket reporting so you can see what we did, when, and why, which helps governance, insurance conversations, and planning the next improvement cycle.

If we need someone on-site, can you still help?

Absolutely. Remote doesn’t mean “never on the ground.” We travel for structured work: new office setups, hardware replacements, cabling partners coordination, executive briefings, and incident support when remote diagnosis has hit its limit. Travel is scoped and scheduled so costs and outcomes are predictable.

We already have an IT person. Can Layer 3 complement them?

Yes, many clients blend internal IT with an external partner for surge capacity, security depth, or out‑of‑hours coverage. We can own defined towers (security, Microsoft stack, hosting) while your in-house team keeps product knowledge and culture, or act as primary operator with clear handover documentation so you’re never locked in.
